Breathing Meditation | UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center

These free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammers Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom.

Mindful awareness meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing ones physical, mental, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, reduce emotional reactivity, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half-hour weekly sessions are open to people of all levels of experience.

Past sessions are available on the MARC website, where you can also download the UCLA Mindful app.

Mindful Awareness Research Center

For over a decade, the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA has gathered leading experts and scientists committed to equipping the public with the mindfulness tools to improve both mental and physical health. MARC has offered classes, workshops, and programs for the UCLA campus and general public, including free 30-minute drop-in mindfulness meditations on the UCLA campus, and a Mindful Awareness Meditation at the Hammer Museum which attracts nearly 200 attendees each Thursday.

But we need your help!

Join MARC as 1 of 100 donors who believe that mindfulness has the ability to make our society better. Your donation, whether big or small, will be used to bring mindfulness education and training deeper into the community through:

Free mindfulness drop-ins throughout Los Angeles, including in under-resourced communities

Scholarships for online Mindful Awareness Practices courses for instructors and teachers who can carry on MARCs teachings into their classrooms, and other settings

Expanded mindfulness offerings to the UCLA and Westwood neighborhoods

Continued development of the UCLA Mindful mobile app, which provides free guided meditation sessions to users around the world

Interesting facts:

In 1944 the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto Faculty of Forestry entered into a partnership to educate government personnel and university students. For many years the site was known as the Ranger School and later, the Ontario Forest Technical Training School. Many courses were taught to government personnel. Students from various faculties at the University came to the school each year on field trips.

In 1969, the schools curriculum of resource management was taken over by Ontarios colleges and universities. That was the first time the future of the property that would become the Frost Centre, was in doubt. In 1974, Ontario Premiere William G. Davis announced that the facility would be developed as a demonstration area in resources management, education and recreation and would be called The Leslie M. Frost Natural Resources Centre. The Centre became the first outdoor education Centre in the province dedicated to environmental and resource management education. It was also the first Centre to have a large crown land management unit , associated with it for research in and demonstration of resource management, recreation and public education.

Free Guided Meditations

is a new center in the at UCLA. The centers mission is to foster mindful awareness across the lifespan through education and research to promote well-being and a more compassionate society.

Contemporary culture in the United States is marked by extraordinary advances in science and technology, yet coupled with these advances is an increasing sense of pressure, complexity and information overload. Individuals across the lifespan are feeling tremendous stress, which is contributing to a variety of mental and physical health problems and diseases.

Mindful awareness is a practice that comes from a variety of contemplative traditions throughout history. It invites people to stop, breathe, observe, and connect with their inner experience. There are many ways to bring mindfulness into ones life, such as meditation, yoga, art, or time in nature. Mindfulness can be trained systematically, and can be implemented in daily life, by people of any age, profession or background.

In the last ten years, significant research has shown mindfulness to address health issues such as lower blood pressure and boost the immune system increase attention and focus, including aid those suffering from ADHD help with difficult mental states such as anxiety and depression, fostering well-being and less emotional reactivity and thicken the brain in areas in charge of decision making, emotional flexibility, and empathy.

Mindfulness Neuroscience And Creativity: An Interactive Experience With Robert Bilder Kate Mccallum Jahna & Michael Perricone And Diana Winston

The c3 collaborated with the UCLA MARC to create a special event where we brought together artists, musicians, media makers, meditators, and neuroscientists for a half day exploring the interface of mindfulness and creativity.

The day included musical performances, meditations, a discussion on the neuroscience of creativity, a digital animeditation, Tibetan singing bowls, and personal creative expression.
