Consider this a Warm Welcome to our Guests and Their Families!
Welcome to Dallas Behavioral Healthcare Hospital! We are a 116 bed inpatient facility located in Desoto Texas and we serve the surrounding communities of Southern Dallas County with a culture committed to compassion, dignity, and respect. Our unique design allows for smaller units focused on specific treatment modalities which center around a charming courtyard.
What has been traditionally referred to as mental illness has a far greater reach into the lives of our families than was once believed. You have my personal commitment as a clinician to continue to reduce stigma and bring to our community creative and integrated solutions. This includes helping those facing the stress and anxiety of coping with depression and other brain disorders, trauma faced in childhood, and the changes we experience as our bodies and brains age.
We have a great team. Since one in five Americans is affected by a behavioral health diagnoses at one point in their lives, our teams goal is to support you through these whether it be in our inpatient setting or through our growing outpatient programs. As a family therapist I am focused on family involvement which helps support our patients and supports the healing process. We encourage developing support systems!
It is an honor and privilege to expand support and services to our region.

Residential Vs Outpatient Treatment
Patients who receive treatment at mental health facilities in Texas have two options for treatment residential and outpatient care.
Some people require intensive treatment in hospitals called residential treatment . Patients under these programs typically have to stay in residential facilities provided by the hospital for intensive treatment.
The other alternative is the outpatient program where patients come in and receive treatment from their homes. While patients under residential treatment are housed away from triggers, outpatient treatment includes adhering as closely as possible to your treatment plan, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The Role Of The Lmha/lbha
The appropriate Local Mental Health Authority or Local Behavioral Health Authority screens patients seeking admission to the hospital to determine the least restrictive treatment environment. This includes private providers.
The LMHA or LBHA gives important facts to the facility, including patient identifying information, legal status, medical and medication information, behavioral data and other treatment information.
If a person seeks admission without prior screening by the LMHA, the hospital conducts an emergency medical screening, in compliance with Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act and consults with the LMHA. EMTALA is a federal law that requires hospital emergency departments to medically screen every patient who seeks emergency care and to stabilize or transfer those with medical emergencies, regardless of health insurance status or ability to pay. The admitting physician has the final authority regarding admission of an individual, consistent with resources available at the hospital. All patients sent to the facility through court commitments are evaluated for admission. In general, to be involuntarily admitted, you must show symptoms of mental illness and that you are a danger to yourself or others.

A pre-construction rendering of the new psychiatric hospital in Houston.
A new 264-bed state psychiatric facility in Houston opened this week, and will start accepting patients in March. The John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center is an addition to the existing UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center, and will serve the city of Houston as well as 29 surrounding counties.
In 2017, the Texas Legislature approved state funding for the $127 million project, and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, led its construction. The goal was to help alleviate strain on the states existing psychiatric facilities.
Dr. Lokesh Shahani, a psychiatrist and the chief medical officer at the new hospital, spoke to Texas Standard about how the hospital will serve patients and whether one new hospital is enough to ease an overburdened state psychiatric system. Listen to the interview with Dr. Shahani in the audio player above or read the transcript below.
