Welcome Tomental Health First Aid Australia

Mental Health First Aid Course Offered at Carolinas HealthCare System

1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That means that every person is likely to know someone who is experiencing a mental health problem, whether that is a family member, a friend or colleague. In fact, mental illness is now said to affect every Australian either directly or indirectly.

We need more mental health literacy and support skills in the community to help catch more Australians experiencing mental health problems and troubled times.

This is where Mental Health First Aid training can help.

Mental Health First Aid skills based, early-intervention training programs mobilise and empower communities by equipping people with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, connect and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

Anyone can have a conversation that may save a life. Everyone should know how.

What Is Mental Health First Aid And What Does It Teach

  • MHFA is skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge.
  • Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, MHFA helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.
  • Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan to recognize warning signs of a mental health or substance use challenge, provide help in crisis and non-crisis situations and understand where to turn for additional assistance.

What You Learn

Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help.

  • Substance Use disorders

Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well.

How Do We Help

Mental Health First Aid Course

Through education and training we raise awareness and teach practical skills around mental health. In particular, ensuring everyone knows what mental health is, how to spot the signs and symptoms of poor mental health and knowing where they, and others, can get help. Doing this means that people are more likely to recognise problems and proactively seek help before the issue becomes more serious. This change often results in an estimated 500% Return on Investment by reducing things like absence, presenteeism and staff turnover. Once trained, Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health Champions are able to use the practical skills and knowledge taught during our courses to provide that much needed early intervention and help to others.

Furthermore, since MoreMentalHealth was founded, we have trained hundreds of learners, many of which maintain contact with us and have some fantastic things to say.

What Are The Business Consequences Of Ignoring Mental Health In The Workplace

Someone with poor mental health may not realise it and even if they do, they may be reluctant to seek help, or might not know where to turn for care. In the workplace, there is still a great deal of ignorance around mental health issues, including uncertainty about how to recognise mental illness, and uncertainty about how to react when faced with it. This means that those in need of mental health help and support do not receive it.When left uninformed, managers and co-workers may unwittingly exhibit stigmatising behaviours, which can be detrimental to a person experiencing a mental health issue. Furthermore, by failing to respond appropriately to an employee with a mental health issue, an organisation may open itself to a claim for compensation. This could be lengthy, expensive, and take precious time away from managers and staff.
