Residential Mental Health Facility And Therapeutic Community In Pennsylvania

Residential mental health facilities and long-term mental health facilities often focus on pathology, or what is not working in their residents lives. Our experience suggests that this approach may be counterproductive for promoting a sense of security and trust vital for individuals struggling with serious mental illnesses to risk practicing new ways of thinking and acting.

At Spirit of Gheel, Inc., a private, non-profit residential psychiatric therapeutic community in Pennsylvania, we believe it is possible for adults with serious and persistent mental illnesses to attain states of well-being in keeping with their unique strengths. To this end, we focus on facilitating treatment and living environments designed to empower our residents whom we refer to as friends to find their individual paths to wellness and recovery.

Our long-term mental health facilities in the Pennsylvania countryside include two residential houses within easy walking distance of each other, connected by a covered bridge built in 1856. Gheel House and Buttonwood Farm are both licensed as Personal Care Homes by the PA Department of Human Services. Working farms, hiking trails, streams, and woodlands surround our properties. These idyllic settings, along with private rooms for each friend and an emphasis on healthy food and activities, contribute to making our campuses in the words of a former resident rare gems among residential mental health facilities in Pennsylvania.

Finding The Right Long

Finding the right mental health facility can be extremely stressful and confusing. Those with deep-rooted emotional, behavioral and psychiatric issues can benefit from mental health treatment. There are many different types of mental health facilities which vary based on the needs of the clients they serve. Individuals seeking mental health treatment should first examine their needs in order to find the right mental health treatment center.

Different types of mental health disorders:

There are many different types of mental health disorders and diagnoses. Some of the more frequently diagnosed mental health disorders are:

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

There are many different types of long-term mental health facilities.

  • The first type of residential mental health facilities is a secured skilled nursing facility that offers long-term care. This is where the doors are secured, and the resident receives mental health care when the psychiatric provider comes to visit.
  • Second is a group home setting where the residents receive support, supervision, meals and a place to sleep. The individual would then need to go to a mental health outpatient care center for their mental health needs.
  • During your search, it is essential to know what your insurance will cover. Some facilities will only accept private pay, and some accept Medicaid long-term care insurance known in Arizona as ALTCS . Calling your insurance provider and finding out what is covered is important.

    Patient Needs And Treatment Options

As you make your way through our Directory of Residential Treatment Programs, you will discover many differences among communities. How do you know which psychiatric treatment approach is best? Which residential structure will work best? For example, how do you know if a same-sex community is best or not a good idea? How do you know whether more independence is a good idea or a recipe for back-sliding?

To find the answer, you can take the following approach:

    • Carefully consider psychiatric needs and the facilitys offerings.
    • For the person going to the program, experience is the best guide. They should outline the conditions in which their psychiatric condition has improved.
    • Family members might reflect on their experience as well. Under what circumstances has the person done better?
    • Discuss all of these issues with facility administration and staff.

The Mental Health Assisted Living Facility Contract

Regardless of what type of assisted living facility you decide will meet your needs, there will be a resident contract. These documents detail the services, charges and conditions of residency. It is not a bad idea to have the contract reviewed by your legal counsel. Of particular concern for residents with mental illness and their families are the conditions that require a resident to move. This is commonly for the protection of the other residents, staff, and possibly for the resident themselves.

If a mental condition advances past the ability of the facility, it must have a method for removal of the resident. This is common, but the time to assess its reasonableness in your case is before you sign the contract and expose yourself to fees and extra costs. If the potential resident has a condition that reasonably can be expected to progress to include actions that will cause removal from the facility, it might not be the appropriate long-term solution for that senior. You want the home to be as permanent as possible.

The Rise And Limits Of Residential Mental Health Programs

As inpatient hospitalization increasingly fails to be a good or even viable option for people struggling with severe mental illness, private residential mental health treatment programs have emerged as an alternative to hospital-based healing. Such programs aim to provide comprehensive treatment experiences with the compassion and intensity of treatment so often missing from hospital settings.

Unfortunately, many such programs are unlicensed, run by poorly trained staff, and rely on outdated, sometimes inhumane treatment practices. Of course, high-quality residential treatment centersdo exist small, intimate, licensed programs staffed by highly trained mental health professionals can provide exceptional and compassionate care.

However, these programs are often limited to 30-90 day courses of treatment. While this treatment duration is ideal for many people struggling with mental illness, it often remains inadequate for those with severe psychiatric illness, who struggle with chronic relapse, who have co-occurring disorders, or who require extensive life skills development it simply doesnt provide the time necessary to make real, meaningful changes in the lives of people with complex disorders and low function.

Costs Of Mental Health Assisted Living Facilities

    Adult Mental Health Treatment Center

The average cost of assisted living is $3,300 per month. Specialized care in a mental health assisted living facility can start at $5,000 per month.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has a guideline of 30% of income as a threshold for affordability. Many afflicted with mental illness have lower income, which complicates the aspect of finding affordable mental heath care at assisted living facilities. These patients are more likely to use government funded programs.

HUD has two popular programs. The Housing Choice Voucher Program, known as Section 8, helps low-income families and the disabled. The Supportive Housing for People with Disabilities Program, known as Section 811, is more specialized to address disabilities, including chronic mental illness. HUD can provide a list of subsidized properties and a resource guide providing information about programs.

    Readiness For Mental Health Treatment

Is there a right time for a person to enter residential psychiatric treatment? For many families, the choice to pursue residential treatment is difficult from both an emotional and a financial standpoint. It can awaken feelings of guilt if the family is ready for placement yet the individual is resisting. There are several points to keep in mind regarding readiness.

    Recognizing the Need

Often, the family is the first to recognize the need for mental health treatment. The family sees the need to set limits on an adult family members behavior and lifestyle, and may express their realization as, This cant go on.

    Role of the Individual

Sometimes a mentally ill individual also recognizes that their own efforts havent worked and that they cant seem to improve their mental health on their own. But sometimes the individual does not see or admit this, and the family needs to take action anyway. In some cases, the family may make further support contingent on the persons agreeing to get treatment for his or her mental illness. All of these scenarios can be the driving force for positive change.

    Feelings About Residential Care

Spending time in a mental health treatment facility is never part of a persons vision of their own future. Even when an adult with mental illness recognizes the need for psychiatric help, they often have mixed feelings about entering a residential treatment community.

    The Benefits Of A Long

    NHS Tayside

Every year, millions of Americans experience mental illness symptoms serious enough to require treatment. Many people get the help they need in outpatient programs. Others do better in a more extensive inpatient treatment.

The length of time you spend in treatment may also have a big impact on your recovery. A relatively short stay often provides the desired benefits. However, to get the most out of treatment, you may need long-term mental health care.

There are a number of reasons for enrolling in long-term mental health facilities. Important factors include the nature of your illness, as well as the seriousness of your symptoms.
