‘my Prayer Was Answered’
Hughes cancer is in its early stages, and she is already in the process of fighting it.
The morning she got the call, she was getting ready for the noon show on WCPO. It was a little after 8 a.m.
She went to work. She remembers there were storms that day.
I was a nervous wreck and I was a ball of tears, but I never cried because I had to be on-air at noon,” she said. “And I called my husband and he was like, Dont go to work, and Im like, I have to because the other person is already gone. You know, how you worry about everything else.
Hughes left work early and that night went with her husband, former University of Cincinnati basketball player and alumni director Myron Hughes, to the oncologist.
If it wasnt for the grace of God and my doctor, Amy Thompson, ordering me a test that I probably would not have even ever gotten, she said, I would not know whats happening to me right now … until it was far, far too late.
Hughes said she is beyond grateful to her doctors and God for helping her through this. Hughes has been afraid of this disease ever since her mother passed from it but now, she feels strong.
She doesnt feel lucky Hughes doesnt believe in luck. What she feels is blessed.
My prayer was answered, she said. No, I dont want to have cancer nobody wants to have it. But my greatest fear was having it and not knowing.
Hughes Family History With Breast Cancer
Hughes has been preparing for this news since she was a young girl.
Her mother passed away from breast cancer in her 40s. Hughes mother had a mastectomy, and then one day a year later she said she didnt feel well.
She went to the hospital, and three days later, she passed, Hughes said. It was devastating to me and my siblings.
Since then, Hughes has taken her health very seriously. She runs, swims, lifts weights, eats organic foods, doesnt snack and has cut red meat from her diet.
She drinks green tea. She eats walnuts.
I do all the things that people do trying to stay healthy, she said, and I still have cancer. But cancer doesnt have me.

One of our family members here at CBS3 knows all too well the fear, sadness, worry all the emotions of having a child with cancer.
When Caleb Hendricks was 8 years old, he started having terrible headaches. He can still remember the first one.
I woke up one morning and I had a splitting migraine. I went into my parents room and I was like I dont feel well. I have a really bad headache. I ran to the and bathroom and threw up, Caleb said.
Then, he started having problems with his vision.
Every time I went to a plate when I was playing baseball, I always saw two balls and I didnt know which one to hit. I went up to my dad and I was like, Dad, I dont know which ball to hit. And hes like, What?’ Caleb said.
Caleb was seen by doctors several times, but because he was otherwise healthy, these issues were chalked up to minor illnesses.
At the beginning, everyone thought it was just a flu or a really bad cold. My mom was like, Its a brain tumor. 100%’ Caleb said.
Calebs mom happens to be our very own meteorologist Tammie Souza. And sadly, she had been through childhood cancer before that time, as a sibling, having lost her sister to brain cancer when she was just 4 years old. And she was right, Caleb had a grade 1 glioma.

I remember Greg calling on a weekday morning in early April. He said Caleb had woken up screaming about a headache, then vomited and went back to sleep. That had never happened before and Greg was ready to head for the doctors office when Caleb woke up and said he felt fine. Strangely, my first thought was a brain tumor, but he suffers from seasonal allergies and so we convinced ourselves that was the cause. We were wrong.
Over the next few days I will share from my journal what we experienced in the hope that this will help other parents to recognize the warning signs and know what steps to take. I also want to draw attention to the fact that pediatric brain tumor research is near the bottom of all tumor research and funding — yet it is a major cause of death in children.

Boy Battling Terminal Brain Cancer Sworn In As Honorary Officer: So Many Emotions
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – A 10-year-old boy battling terminal brain cancer is fulfilling a lifelong dream by traveling around the country and being sworn in as an honorary police officer.
WSMV reports Devarjaye DJ Daniel, of Texas, was sworn in at the Goodlettsville Police Department on Wednesday. He was greeted by officers and became an honorary officer in front of a crowd of smiling faces.
DJ said he is visiting as many police departments as he can after first starting his mission to be sworn in as an honorary police officer at 100 law enforcement agencies.
But he has far exceeded that goal already being sworn in by almost 700 law enforcement agencies since the beginning of this year.
DJ has been joined by his father Theodis Daniel on the road, and the two are also raising awareness about children battling cancer while meeting with law enforcement agencies.
The boys father said he believes that his son has lived past his five-months-to-live prognosis because of their meetings with law enforcement.
Goodlettsville Police Department Field Training Officer Rico Jones said he saw DJs story and felt compelled to reach out to the family.
Jones said he was moved by not only DJs courageousness while battling cancer himself, but the fact he was so selfless and wanted to raise awareness for other children battling cancer.

What Are Jovitas Next Steps
Nduoms lifes work is specifically glioblastoma, and he says Emory is constantly studying the latest treatment, so Jovita is in the best possible hands to fight this.
We know that our treatments do work. Radiation and chemotherapy certainly slow down lesions like this, but they dont cure them. So that means we have to look for new options, he said.
Jovita has the benefit of being at Emory, where theyve developed treatments and clinical trials for her specific cancer to try and find a cure.
She is now undergoing radiation and chemotherapy to slow the cancers growth. Nduom says Jovita continues to be a model patient.
Shes done fantastic. I was actually able to see her in clinic a couple of weeks ago. She was in good spirits, she was with friends and family as always, he said.
Nduom says Jovitas healthy lifestyle and supportive family are not just good for her spirit, theyre a critical part of her treatment.
All of these things play into patients who do better when they face a disease like this and I got to tell you, Ms. Moores got one of the best teams Ive ever seen, he said.
That team includes her wonderful family, friends, Channel 2 family and all of you.
The love, the prayers, the positivity is welcomed. She feels it and we need to keep it coming, Condace said.
Kris 6 Meteorologist Dies After Cancer Fight

KRIS 6 meteorologist Matt Terhune never dwelled on the issues that plagued him.
Even after being diagnosed with brain cancer in 2007, he continued his on-camera duties while undergoing surgeries and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Terhune’s battle with cancer came to an end Friday morning when he died of the terminal illness. He was 39.
Terhune stepped away from the camera last fall after his health continued to decline. Terhune spent his final days in Sinton with his wife, Michelle, and two children.
“We’ve known for sometime this was inevitable,” said KRIS 6 News Director Paul Alexander. “Even though we had time to prepare ourselves, it didn’t make today any easier.”
Terhune had been with the NBC affiliate since 2001. In the newsroom, Terhune was remembered most for his uplifting attitude. Despite his hardships, he maintained optimism that was infectious.
“We all get along here, but everyone was drawn toward Matt,” Alexander said. “Even in the midst of this horrific thing he was dealing with … he was always upbeat and positive. To say he fought a good fight would be an understatement.”
Terhune’s personality was on display for South Texas viewers to see every time he gave a forecast, Michelle Terhune said.
“He didn’t have a face for TV and a face for home,” she said. “He was very happy all the time. He always had a smile on his face.”

ATLANTA Months after two masses were discovered in her brain, Channel 2 Action News Anchor Jovita Moore asked us to share that she has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The WSB-TV veteran anchor underwent surgery in April days after doctors discovered the masses. We now know those tumors are a cancer called glioblastoma.
Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer and doctors say, at this time, there is no cure, only treatments to slow it down.
This is tough news to learn and tough news to share with all of our loyal viewers.
Jovita has felt the love and prayers that people across the country have shared with her over the past several months. She is grateful for all the support and asks that you stay positive as she continues to focus on her health, her treatments and her family. Jovita is tough and ready for this fight.
Our girl is strong. Our girl is a fighter and shes doing great every day, WSB-TV Community and Public Affairs Director Condace Pressley said.
Condace and Jovita have been friends for more than two decades. She spoke with Channel 2s Justin Farmer about how Jovita is holding up during this battle.
Virginia Meteorologist Bravely Removes Wig On Live Tv After Beating Cancer
NORFOLK, Va., — One year ago, Virginia meteorologist Crystal Harper announced her cancer diagnosis.
On live TV Sunday, the 13News Now meteorologist shared a special moment with her viewers.
“I promised I’d be back and here I am and there is just one more thing I have to do,” Harper said on air.
She then removed her wig.
“This has been my security blanket really for the past year, so it’s time to get rid of it.”
Harper was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last May and has been very open about her battle.
She is officially and completely cancer free.
Harper has a goal to raise $50,000 in ten weeks. She said she is “determined to make a difference after seeing first-hand how important cancer research is.”

Being Proactive Saved Her Life
Hughes should not know that she has cancer yet.
The mass in her right breast is the size of a small grain of rice. A breast exam could not detect the tumor. A mammogram didnt see anything, or 3D imaging.
Hughes sees her OBGYN every year, and nothing has ever been wrong. Her tests always come back negative, and she feels and looks healthy year after year.
Last June, Hughes asked her doctor what her next steps were if there was new technology or a new test that she could take to be proactive as a high-risk patient.
Her doctor told her about a breast MRI, an imaging technique that is far from mainstream but can detect things that mammograms cant. Hughes expressed interest and her doctor made a few calls.
The breast MRI was scheduled for the next years checkup.
On Friday, July 19, Hughes went to UC Health for her test. The breast MRI was unlike any other test Hughes had taken before.
They scan you all kinds of different ways, she said. They move you around, like youre on an amusement park ride.
After it was over, Hughes went about her day as usual. She got a call from her OBGYN just a few hours after the MRI, when she was sitting in a Sams Club parking lot. They went back and forth chatting for a bit Hughes had become friendly with her doctor by that point.
Hey, I had that test today, she said to her doctor over the phone.
I know, her doctor replied.
Then Hughes voice lowered: What?
Hughes needed to go in for more tests. And then biopsies. And more tests.

BAM makes a consistent effort to be trailblazers outside of the weather community by support charitable works. BAM is a staunch supporter of The Cure Starts Now which focuses on the research of pediatric brain cancer. Seven custom made hearts, such as the one in the photo on the right, hang in BAMs office that have been made by children suffering from brain cancer. BAM received these paintings through auctions which raise money for The Cure Starts Now and brain cancer research. It is BAMs hope that in the coming years, the entire wall will be filled as a reminder of the struggle that these families endure and that much is still needed to be done to cure pediatric brain cancer.
Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, BAM partnered with multiple local restaurants across Central Indiana to encourage patrons to order carry outs. BAM covered the first $500 for these establishments, encouraging the public to get out and support local businesses as some struggled to stay afloat due to statewide shutdowns.

Anchorman Dave Benton tells his audience that he hopes to add a few days and make them the best they can be
A television news anchorman has told viewers he has only four to six months to live because of brain cancer, but he hopes to work as long as he can.
Dave Benton of CBS affiliate WCIA-TV in Champaign, Ill., on Thursday told his audience that doctors recently told him that his brain tumor is too large to be treated with surgery or radiation.
What Is Glioblastoma
Jovita gave Justin Farmer permission to talk with her doctor about her diagnosis and share that information with all of you.
Jovita is being treated by the best of the best at Emory University Hospital. Her surgeon, Dr. Edjah Nduom, said prayers and positivity are a critical part of the next phase of Jovitas health journey.
After removing some of the tumor from Jovitas brain back in April, Emory pathologists ran tests and learned the diagnosis.
As a neurosurgeon, we like to pride ourselves with our skills and what we can do with our hands. is not something I can cure with surgery alone. The reason for that is that gliomas, and glioblastoma in particularly, they have these tentacles that go beyond the lesions that we can see on a scan and beyond what we can see with our operating microscopes, Nduom said.
Nduom says glioblastoma, which is the most common type of brain cancer, is not hereditary and has nothing to do with a patients diet or lifestyle, unlike smoking, which can cause lung cancer.
A glioma is a type of tumor that comes from the support cells of the brain. It doesnt come from anywhere else in the body it starts there and theyre very aggressive, he said. Thats one of the reasons Im so desperate to continue to work on better treatments for these patients. They didnt earn this. They didnt bring it upon themselves theyre just in a tough situation and were trying to find the best way to make them better.
