We Can Guard Our Hearts And Minds Through The Knowledge Of Gods Word
Knowing the Bible well is key. As the author of the Letter to the Hebrews has said,
Solid food is for the mature who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:14
Paul says in Romans 16:19 that God wants us to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. We do not need a comprehensive understanding of the Kingdom of Darkness to be able to recognise and defeat its forces. Rather, we need to be wise about God and his ways, and lead lives that are informed, guided, edified, and empowered by his Word and his Holy Spirit.
A Prayer To Guard My Eyes And Ears
Lord, I am helpless without You. Every day, Im tempted to look and hear things against You, not for You. Give me the strength and determination of a mighty warrior to guard and defend my heart and mind at all costs, protecting what mattersmy walk with You, my witness to others, and the joyful preservation of my family and community. Amen.
What Are Issues Of The Heart
Since we understand that the heart refers to the mind and the heart in Western terminology, we can understand the issues of the heart to be anything that we face. These would include our challenges with our identity in Christ, problems with our children, coworkers, friendsin fact, anything that affects your life is an issue of the heart.

I Failed To Set A Watchman Over My Spiritual Heart
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Luke 6:45 ESV
My heart and my mind affected everything, especially blogging!
I told a friend I was tapped out! I couldnt write! Topics were not the problem I had ideas but the words wouldnt come! I had a block and nothing I did worked!
Because my writing flows from my heart, the fact that I did not have a guarded heart also affected my mind because it allowed negative thoughts to enter in! I began to think maybe my blogging wasnt good enough. I thought maybe I really WASNT .
You see how that worked?
Because I didnt recognize the enemy causing those disruptions in my sleep, that then caused me to fail to go to God with it. As that spiraled into exhaustion it then started a thought process that led to me thinking I wasnt called to the ministry I was in. Wow! The words well, that escalated quickly come to mind, but it is SO true!
Satan loves to attack our thinking when we dont protect our hearts and many times it is because we left our minds and thoughts unguarded! It flows both ways! He can attack our hearts through our thinking and our thinking through our unguarded hearts!
Be sure to always guard your mind and heart each and every moment because the enemy can slip in THAT fast!
Set a watchman on the wall and dont wait for the attack to act!!

What Kind Of Heart Is Proverbs Talking About
To understand why we need to guard the heart above all else, lets consider what kind of heart Proverbs is talking about.
In Hebrew, the word heart is Lev, which speaks of the heart as the inner man, the place where decisions are made, our consciencethe soul. Although the heart is mentioned hundreds of times in Scripture, none refer to the organ. Instead, the Scripture uses the heart as a metaphor for the inner man.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 tells us to love the LORD our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our might. We may think God wants our time, money, and every drop of energy we have to offer, but above all, He wants our love. Not a half-hearted, only-when-I-need-you kind of love. He desires a love that consumes our hearts, fully influences our behavior and choices, and defines our lives.
Take Your Thoughts Captive
Thoughts come into our minds whether we want them to or not. We need to make the decision to accept the thought or reject it. If we spend time thinking of something, it gets imprinted in our subconsciousness which influences our actions.
We need to line our thoughts up with Gods Word and take our thoughts captive so we dont get led astray. Knowing what the Bible says is an important part of this. How can we know what to allow in our minds if we dont know the Bible?
Take the time to study the Bible and focus your thoughts on God, His desires, and his teachings. You need to control your mind in order to guard your heart.

Guard Your Heart And Mind When The Enemy Strikes
We have failed to set a watchman on the wall. We wait until the weakness comes, we wait until the attack comes.
Set a guard and have Gods peace!
Have Gods peace in your family, have Gods peace in your personal life, have Gods peace in your spiritual life! Going to God should be your first line of defense, not your last resort!
I wasnt doing anything to prevent the attack from coming until AFTER it took place. By then I was exhausted and worn out.
What an ingenious plan for an enemy isnt it? Wait until the army is exhausted and worn out and then wage the battle! That devil prowls about like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour!
I was exhausted but he didnt sleep! He prowled!
I need to seek Gods peace before there is a lack of sleep! When we are in ministry of any kind, the enemy is going to attack our weaknesses. Mine is lack of sleep! I knew that but I didnt cover myself in prayer for it until AFTER it was an issue!
I could feel God telling me You did not keep the mind of Christ and were relying on your own human judgments! You tried to fight the battle once it began instead of keeping the enemy away to begin with!
The grace of God would have been sufficient for me had I gone to Him to begin with.
You Can Guard Your Mind By Choosing Your Companions Wisely
1 Corinthians 15:33 Proverbs 22:24-25 Psalms 1:1 Proverbs 12:26 Proverbs 18:24
The Bible is clear when it tells us to choose our companions wisely because the company you keep determines the type of person you are. Maybe they are doing things that you dont do, but you condone it once you know it. That means you are just as guilty.
The law of the land believes the same. Anyone found hiding evidence from the police is held as an accessory to the crime committed.
Your chosen companions should be friends who love Jesus. Look for friends that will tell you when your heart has made a wrong choice. Dont choose friends that will support your wrong motives and intentions.
Your heart will be led astray if you allow your life to be flooded with a companionship that doesnt allow God to direct their hearts desires. Any advice given by those friends would go against what the Word says.

Guard Your Heart And Mind Through The Peace Of God
Philippians 4:6-7 says:
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
NKJV
The peace of God will guard your heart and your mind IN OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving!
It is really THAT simple!
We have direct access to God almighty. We can approach Him at any time. Yet so often we sit around and wait for the enemy to attack before we run to Him.
We have failed to stand firm. we have failed to put on the whole armor of God and, many times, we even take on a complaining spirit griping about the situation we are in!

What Does God Say About Guarding Your Heart
Because God understands how important it is to guard your heart, there are numerous Bible verses that admonish us to do so.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Colossians 3:5 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8 ESV
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Galatians 6:1 ESV
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV
A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. Proverbs 15:13 ESV
Focus On What Is Before You

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned .

Dont seek out trouble. I dont know about you but I have met people who always seem to be in the midst of some disaster or mischief. There are people who seem to thrive on stirring up trouble but that kind of behavior is destructive.
It distracts the persons involved from focusing on what God had intended them to. Each of us has been given a task and we need to do it to the best of our abilities. But unless we focus on Christ who is our example, well get drawn away by things that were never any of our business in the first place.
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

What Guard Really Means
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
While Proverbs 4:23 is the go-to verse about guarding your heart, could it be possible that its not all there is to the story?
It wasnt until recently that I discovered guard doesnt mean bar, seal, or coat in a shield of lead. In the Hebrew, keep literally means to set a watchman over it but not just any watchman.
Ive been driven by fear to guard my heart, scared of the consequences if I didnt. So, instead of setting a watchman over it, I locked it up out of panic that it would escape. I feared that it would lead me to sin, and that I would be to blame for the prison break.
Guard Your Heart And Mind Recognize Attacks
Fear and anxiety are attacks to thwart you. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and a sound mind.
A spirit of fear has no place with God. I love the line in Natalie Grants song, Your Great Name that says, Every fear, has no place, at the sound of Your great name. The enemy, he has to leave, at the sound of Your great name.
The name of Jesus conquers all things! No attack is too great, no fear is too strong against the powerful name of Jesus.

Guard Your Heart And Mind From The Things You Watch
What kind of shows or movies are you watching on TV?
If you were to sit down and watch tv with Jesus, would you watch the same shows?
What you constantly watch will affect what you think, feel, say and do. If you constantly gaze at the wrong things, you will likely flood your mind with wrong thoughts.
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.
Matthew 6:22-23
