How Can I Help Handle My Stress
Everyone has to deal with stress. There are steps you can take to help you handle stress in a positive way and keep it from making you sick. Try these tips to keep stress in check:
Develop a new attitude
- Become a problem solver. Make a list of the things that cause you stress. From your list, figure out which problems you can solve now and which are beyond your control for the moment. From your list of problems that you can solve now, start with the little ones. Learn how to calmly look at a problem, think of possible solutions, and take action to solve the problem. Being able to solve small problems will give you confidence to tackle the big ones. And feeling confident that you can solve problems will go a long way to helping you feel less stressed.
- Be flexible. Sometimes, its not worth the stress to argue. Give in once in awhile or meet people halfway.
- Get organized. Think ahead about how youre going to spend your time. Write a to-do list. Figure out whats most important to do and do those things first.
- Set limits. When it comes to things like work and family, figure out what you can really do. There are only so many hours in the day. Set limits for yourself and others. Dont be afraid to say NO to requests for your time and energy.

Counselor Rides With Police Talk To Students With Concerns
ORLANDO, Fla. Its a first for the police department at the University of Central Florida: a full-time, in-house mental health counselor to assist officers when theyre dealing with students in crisis.
Mental health counselors dont go to school to learn how to ride around with a police officer responding to calls, so when a counselor joins a police department for that purpose there is a learning curve.
But Kirwin already learned what its like in her 2 years at the sheriffs office.
That experience provided me with a framework of how law enforcement responds to mental health calls, Kirwin said.
Kirwin said clinicians working alongside police is the future of law enforcement.
Having this collaboration with mental health, its not in any way taking away from the importance of what law enforcement does, its very much working together and helping each other and being a resource, Kirwin said.
Kirwin accompanies UCFs Threat Management Team detectives who identify persons of concerns, students who are at risk of harming someone or themselves.
And Kirwin calls those students and checks on them.
Often the people in crisis calling 911 dont need law enforcement.
