The Mental Health First Aid training course was developed to help people provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. MHFA teaches mental health first aid skills. The course does not train people to be therapists, counselors, or mental health professionals. The philosophy behind MHFA is that mental health crisis, such as suicidal and self-harming actions, may be avoided through early intervention. Teen Mental Health First Aid
Many teenagers lack adequate mental health literacy, stigmatizing views toward those who suffer from mental illness, and the ability to provide peers with the best Mental Health First Aid.
Training could help to enhance these, enabling better social support and boosting appropriate help-seeking among teenagers with newly developing mental health issues. A new project of Mental Health First Aid International, teen Mental Health First Aid , is a 3-hour, 75-minute classroom-based training course for teenagers between the ages of 10 and 15.
High school students in years 10 through 12 and in years 7-9 are taught how to provide their peers mental health first aid in the Teen MHFA Course. Research showing that young people prefer to share difficulties with peers led to the development of the course.
The course material is based on research done to identify the most effective steps a young person may take to support a peer who is experiencing mental health issues.
What Are The Business Consequences Of Ignoring Mental Health In The Workplace
Someone with poor mental health may not realise it and even if they do, they may be reluctant to seek help, or might not know where to turn for care. In the workplace, there is still a great deal of ignorance around mental health issues, including uncertainty about how to recognise mental illness, and uncertainty about how to react when faced with it. This means that those in need of mental health help and support do not receive it.When left uninformed, managers and co-workers may unwittingly exhibit stigmatising behaviours, which can be detrimental to a person experiencing a mental health issue. Furthermore, by failing to respond appropriately to an employee with a mental health issue, an organisation may open itself to a claim for compensation. This could be lengthy, expensive, and take precious time away from managers and staff.

- Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis.
- Use MHFA actions to maintain ones own mental well-being.
Training Helps People Assess Others With Mental Health Conditions
But its not just used in helping strangers on the streetMHFA is equally applicable to friends and family members of individuals with mental illness at any level. The training teaches participants to assess for a risk of suicide or harm, listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information, embolden the individual to seek professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies. Role playing and activities that are included in the training can normalize a variety of what would otherwise be potentially uncomfortable situations.
Given the high rates of co-occurring mental and/or substance use disorders among individuals experiencing homelessness, staff in homeless shelters and people elsewhere who routinely come into contact with such individuals have also benefited from MHFA training.

Mental Health First Aid Participant Experiences
At the end of the first teen Mental Health First Aid session hosted by Hill Country, a student approached one of the teen instructors and told her she might not be back for the second session. She said her mother was concerned her grades would slip because she was missing a core subject to attend the MHFA sessions, and her mother wanted her to return to class.
At the next session, the student told the instructor that over the weekend, her cousin reached out to her because she was having thoughts of suicide. She told her mother, and they talked with the cousins family and got her the support and help she needed. The student said the experience caused her mother to have a change of heart about the MHFA training, and she was allowed to return for the duration of the sessions.

We had a student who was hesitant to take the training on Day One. The student was verbally offensive about us being there. By Day Three, the student felt comfortable coming to us and discussing her problems. We helped her connect with her counselor and to resources to help her immediately. The student later commented, I think its incredible that we can normalize talking about mental health. I struggle with it personally and always feel like my friends dont understand me and think I overreact.
