I began teaching because I wanted to share my love of movement with others. Over the last 10+ years, Ive taught everything from step to indoor cycling to yoga. I continue to do it because I see the positive benefit I have in peoples lives through fitness.

The Power Of The Mind

Many people focus on improving physical strength at the gym, but surprisingly, it’s not what keeps most people from achieving their fitness goals. Sure, you need to build up a certain amount of muscle or flexibility to do yoga poses, but the key to an effective practice is quieting the mind. The same is true about spin, cardio, etc. — they all require a mental strength in order to push beyond our comfort zone and where we think our limits are. The six inches between our ears are often the hardest to conquer. That’s why so much of sports psychology focuses on understanding and improving mental strength. In addition to raw skill, it’s what separates the most elite athletes from others in their field.

The number one reason people don’t work out isn’t due to a lack of motivation it’s due to a lack of time. Obligations to families, careers, or social lives take precedence over physical fitness, which prevents people from making exercise a daily habit.

If you ever told yourself you can’t work out due to a lack of time, consider this: Perhaps it’s not due to a lack of time it’s due to a lack of priorities. And if your rebuttal is, “But I have a family!” “I have a demanding job!” I want you to envision the last time you took a seat on an airplane.

On an airplane, a flight attendant will warn you that when turbulence happens, you should always put your own oxygen mask on first before helping another. This is because you physically cannot help another person unless you help yourself. Therefore, when it comes to setting priorities in your day, week, or year, you should always prioritize yourself. It’s not selfish it’s just a basic fact that when you take care of yourself, everything else falls into place.

This is where the mind, body & soul phenomenon becomes so convoluted, because difficult things happen cyclically. By completing a workout, you will feel better about yourself . When you feel better about yourself, you are more likely to set the right priorities . When you set the right priorities, you are therefore more likely not to skip your workout .

Don’t Forget Mental Health

Its funny to think that not so long ago, gyms were places for extreme athletes and bodybuilders. As people have embraced physical fitness, its evolved into an important part of everyday life.

With yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, were starting to think about mental health more holistically as well. I encourage all of my students to take time out of their day for themselves, as they would their bodies — to be grateful, connect, and challenge how they think about the world. Its important to make our inner selves as strong as our outer selves.

Sometimes we need some help. Think about attempting Adho Mukha Vrksasana without a yogis support or trying to lift heavy weight without a spotter. Outline Your Morning Ritual For Us

My morning ritual has been exceptionally simplified throughout the yearsI wake up and the first conscious thought that I always centre in my mind is I am alive and I am grateful.

From there, I get up and I do a three bullet point gratitude journal and a morning meditation. If my day is super busy and I dont get up as early as Id like to, then I will just go straight into time with Anderson and help him get ready and get his breakfast and then will get my meditation in later in the day. It’s all about being flexible.

I use an Apple watch which tells me my daily step count and I track my workouts there, however truly the only thing I really use it for is a heart monitor. Ill track my workouts to make sure I’m working out in the zone that I want to be in when I’m doing cardio but I try to stay away from being beholden to that kind of stuff – I feel like it can easily be a trigger for obsessive behavior.

It can be good as a guiding tool, but it’s all about how you look at it – for me I like to keep things simple.

Mental Toughness Builds Drive Throughout Your Life

Your brain not your body will get you through the hardest workout of your life. Read that sentence again.

Your mental toughness is the difference between giving one more rep and giving up. Fortunately, your brain is a muscle. Mind Body And Soul Meaning

Exercise is good for your mind, body and SOUL.

The phrase mind, body, and soul refers to the connection and relationship between these three aspects of yourself.

The mind, body, and soul conception is a way of understanding ourselves as “whole people.” A Whole Person has personal and professional lives that interconnect mental, physical, and spiritual components not only influence both spheres but also interact with each other.

Mind. Your mind is your thinking mind that is responsible for your beliefs, thoughts, and actions.

Body. Your body is the physical aspect of yourself that carries you through life and allows you to experience the world through your five senses.

Soul. Your soul or spirit is that intangible part of you that you might refer to as your essence. If you belong to a particular faith, it may be easy for you to connect with the concept of your soul. If you are secular, you might find it outside of religions in actions such as spending time with yourself in nature, doing yoga, or meditating.

The distinction between mind, body, and soul isn’t a strict one. For example, where do emotions sit? We feel them in the body, mind, and soul. From a scientific perspective, we know how deeply connected these three dimensions are that’s kind of the point. You can think of them as being connected by the nervous system, or understand the nervous system to be part of the mind.

To understand them better, lets take a look at each in more detail.

A Fulfilled Soul Creates Positive Physical Habits

As described above, a fueled soul and mind help build physical strength. By setting the right priorities, carving out time to exercise, and putting yourself first, you create the necessary space to commit to a regular fitness routine.

Exercise causes a domino effect by completing one workout, then another, you slowly transition to a healthier lifestyle. While it’s a natural process, it happens differently for each person.

For example, if you work out daily, you’ll be more thirsty, therefore you’ll drink more water. If you drink more water, you’re less likely to drink alcohol or soda, as these beverages won’t prepare you for your next workout. If you cut out soda and alcohol, suddenly you’ll find yourself cutting out fried foods, candy, or other foods that make you feel tired or lethargic. And if you aren’t feeling tired or lethargic, you’ll sleep more soundly, which allows you to wake up and tackle your workout the next day and the whole process begins again.

I truly believe exercise has the potential to change your life, but only if you let it. You have to allow it to become a healthy routine, and to influence other decisions in your life.
